I would like to introduce you to the newest member of our family...Walker Robert Straith. My middle daughter, Brittany, and her husband Reid, brought him into this world just this morning, Thursday, June 11th.
I was SO privileged to be asked to be in the delivery room with Brit and Reid during this miraculous yet common event. When Brit called at 12:30 am Wednesday night to tell us she was headed to the hospital, Dave and I were just getting home from the musical Pippin downtown with some friends. The take home message of this bawdy but thought provoking play was that we are often told by society that in order to find fulfillment in life...or to be successful in life, we have to strive for big, dramatic accomplishments; maybe it's the executive position at a company...the big boat...or the glory that comes with being famous. But, the play goes on to suggest that, in actuality, those things that often bring us the most pleasure and offer us the most fulfillment can be found in the ordinariness of our everyday lives. Maybe it's the wonder of or an appreciation for a sunset even though you've seen a million sunsets before. Perhaps it's taking time to just fathom your abundance or to truly listen to that friend in need. Or maybe, like me, you are blessed to be able to be a first hand witness to the most ordinary but remarkable birth of a child. My experience in the delivery room this morning coupled with the message from this play served as a reminder to me, and perhaps for you as well, that whatever crosses our paths today, let us all be reminded to savor every moment of it...to be present...and to find the true joy in all the ordinariness of our lives!!
