So... we have this new board in our lobby that we are calling "Body's Blasts." Each month we are featuring a different challenge that we will be encouraging our students to participate in. Some will be physical challenges, such as our March Madness...others are to make us learn new tricks, like April's Instagram Posture Challenge, but others are just to promote positive intentional behavior which is this month's Random Acts of Kindness Challenge.
If you've ever been in our friend Herb's class on Sunday morning, you will hear him end class by saying that: "Random Acts of Kindness are the oil of the universe." When we do nice things for others it often changes the course of their day...it changes their brain chemistry which not only betters their day but likely every person who crosses their path. RAK's start a trickle down effect!!
At a very early age we are taught that kindness and compassion are important virtues and, of course, we are encouraged to develop and apply these virtues for their own sakes because it's a good thing to do. BUT what you might be surprised to realize is that doing RAK's is not only good for the recipient but for the doer as well. In fact, performing RAK's is one of the 12 intentional behaviors outlined in the How of Happiness book. If practiced on a regular basis, RAKs actually makes us, the doer, healthier and happier. So, whether the act is large or small and whether the person for whom the act is performed on may or may not be aware of the act, we are challenging all of you to pay it forward during the month of May. Examples include paying for someone's tea behind you in the drive through, writing a thank you note, bringing someone flowers, visiting an elderly relative, giving up your parking spot...we can all think of ways to make someone else's day a little sweeter. If you are lucky enough to be the recipient of an RAK we ask that you write a little note and put it on our Body's Blast board to share with others. And as a side benefit remember that not only do these RAK's better the recipient's day but the giver's as well!! It's a win win!!
