I was in Melinda’s Zumba Gold class this am and at the end she always takes a little time to ask everyone to share what’s going on in their lives. She then announced to us that it was “choose-day”. Tuesday with a choice. Get it?? A great message for ANY day but perhaps even more valuable since we were setting out for an adventure to the zoo with our 3 grandsons!! Need I say more??
It was truly a great day!!! Lots of giggles, sunshine, and amazing animals. But, you just forget in that twenty year lapse of having your own kids, all the “small stuff.” Like at the end of the day when Dave and I struggled in the zoo parking lot for 20 minutes to figure out how to break down the stroller (nope never figured it out and had to call our daughter)... and when we finally got in the car and the boys announced they were hungry and thirsty (of course we hadn’t thought of packing snacks)... and then while stuck in rush hour traffic on 696, yep you guessed it, we realized we should have taken the boys to the bathroom before getting on the road.
So throughout the day Melinda’s “choose day” words resonated with me. I found myself choosing to enjoy the moment... the awe on the boys' faces, the interaction between the cousins, the wonder of these incredible animals and the warmth of the sun - instead of being frazzled by the little things that i could’ve easily let frazzle me and thrown off the day.
Research tells us that we actually only use our conscious brains 5% of the time and the rest of the time we revert to old habit patterns and previous experience.
So maybe this message can serve as a reminder to keep striving to make more conscious decisions, to be present more of the time, and to react less and enjoy more. Cheers to every day being “choose-day.”
P.S. Thanks Melinda!!
