Chris and I were in Jamie’s class the other day and she was telling us about a woman who iS said to be the oldest woman doing yoga. The comment was made to her that I can’t believe you can do yoga, and her response was that I am so grateful I GET to do yoga. It’s a gift not a practice based on restrictions or accomplishments.
Afterwards, Chris and I were chatting about how this parallels the message I am trying to send to all of you as a Registered Dietitian. You don’t have to focus on dietary restrictions and what you CAN'T EAT - but what you GET to eat is yummy foods...you GET to eat a huge variety of foods...you GET to eat every 2-3 hours. You GET to eat unlimited fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains, lean meats and low fat dairy. You even GET to eat Pizza it you choose whole grain crust and load up with tomato sauce, veggies and low fat cheese like mozzarella!! I LOVE PIZZA!!
So, the bottom line is that we are not meant to go through life feeling denied. Food is meant to be enjoyed. We just need to embrace all the delicious healthy food choices available to us and focus less on what fad diets and nutrition trends tell us we can’t enjoy. And, of course, like everything else in life it’s all about balance. (Like maybe split the pizza with a friend or pass on the pepperoni). But base your diet on sound nutrition with splurge foods blended in here and there!!
