  icecream

Nearly every summer for the past several years our family has headed to a place called Camp Arcadia!! My youngest daughter, Brie, says it’s her favorite place on Earth. It’s set right on Lake Michigan, the sunsets are amazing, and in addition to some extended family, all three of our daughters and their families were able to join us this year!!

So it’s a beautiful venue and an opportunity for some great family time!! BUT (guessing you knew there was a BUT coming) there are a few challenges accompanying this week, not the least of which is the food situation. Given all the good stuff, I try really hard to deal with it, but let me paint you a picture of what I’m up against. The bell rings at 8:30 am, 12:30 pm and 6:30 pm for meals that are served family style in a huge dining room with a couple hundred campers. There are very few whole grain options and meat is served breakfast, lunch and dinner! So in order to make the best of this less than ideal situation... I eat more of the good carbs when they are offered including fruits, vegetables and potatoes, to offset the slim whole grain options. I also opt for other sources of protein like beans, guacamole and even an occasional peanut butter sandwich instead of meat 3 times a day. I pack snacks like nuts and dried fruit to deal with the frequency of eating and when all else fails i just eat a little less of the foods i wouldn’t normally choose. My night cap is tea instead of wine and often accompanied by a traditional ice cream cone at the end of the day but I go for the single instead of the double.

So maybe you find yourselves in a situation where you don’t have a lot of control over the choices in front of you and you feel a little defeated. Hoping these suggestions will show you how you can make the best out of a less than ideal situation and still make choices that support your health!!
Greetings from Camp Arcadia!!

P.S. This is not to imply that I am not looking forward to some Great Harvest bread and a glass of red wine upon my return!!!
