If you’ve been paying attention to my nutrition nibbles over the past year, or if you’ve come to any of my nutrition seminars, you are likely already aware that frequent eating is the way to go. More specifically, the recommendation is to eat every 2 1/2 to 3 hours or another way to look at it is 4-6 small meals a day. The rationale being threefold. When we go a long time between meals or snacks, our bodies 1) slow down...our metabolism lowers...we have less energy and we burn fewer calories 2) more of what we do eat goes into our fat stores. This is simply based on survival and 3) when we do get around to eating we can rationalize eating everything in sight. This often leads to making poor food choices and over eating!!
So, in an effort to support the idea of eating frequently, we have recently added a little Grab n Go area across from the front desk. You can choose from a handful of yummy snacks that are all Andrea approved and run your errands after class without going into that undesirable starvation mode. We have drinks in the fridge that will hydrate you but are all zero calories and no artificial sweeteners. We have good carbs like whole grain muffins, great harvest granola and popcorn. We also have ways to sustain you a little longer like trek bars and string cheese and even have a way to get your fruit in on the go...with little boxes of raisins.
Oh and one of my personal favorites, that most recently found its way to our shelves, is Witzi Granola. It’s a combo of nuts and seeds - super healthy, yummy and portable. I almost always have a bag of this in my car or purse. The founder of Witzi Granola (Chris’ sister in law Amy Witzigreuter) is going to be here at BL on Monday September 30 and Tuesday October 1st sampling some new flavors of her granola: Pumpkin spice and Banana Berry!! Stop by and taste these new flavors and don’t forget to Grab n Go when you’re leaving BL. Your brain will stay out of that hangry mode and your waistline will thank you as well!!
