So, I was listening to GMA this morning and they stated that we are 3 weeks into January, and this is the point where we first start to see people falling away from their New Years Resolutions!! What?? No!!!! They then went on to say that the next segment would feature a “new” spin on dieting called “intuitive eating.”
Well here’s my response to both of these statements which i will sum up in one sentence...JUST SHOW UP!!!
Physically continue showing up for classes. Make an intention to take a class at least every other day and to do so for ALL of 2020!! Don’t worry about the perfect configuration of cardio, weights and yoga. Just pick one that works with your schedule 4-5 times per week...mix it up and show up!!!
Secondly, the first thing I tell anyone who is looking to manage their weight and health more effectively is to get on their yoga mat!! This time on your mat helps you to connect with yourself, to get to know yourself better, and to make wiser choices about what to put in your mouth. Here’s where the intuitive eating comes in: If we actually slow down and listen, we intuitively know when we are hungry and when we are full! We know which foods make us feel better and which foods we should eat less of. Then it will be more likely that this heightened awareness that you develop on your yoga mat will permeate into your meals and allow you to show up for every meal. Some of the tools that may help you be more present at meals are:
1. Only eat when seated
2. Put your fork down between mouthfuls
3. Wait 5-10 minutes before grabbing that second helping
4. Actually take time to enjoy the texture, the consistency and the taste of the food
5. Don’t talk with food in your mouth!! (I know your mama already told you this but...worth repeating).
6. Grab a glass of wine... slow down and enjoy your meal.
