APril antics

As a Registered Dietitian I get asked many of the same nutrition questions over and over again. The majority of these questions are generated by the media: sensationalized ways to lose weight or a product or program that is being sold that’s going to be the quick fix to all our weight loss problems. Oftentimes I hear chatter about some friend or family member who lost “all this weight” by following the latest and greatest weight loss gimmick and then everyone around this temporarily skinnier person mindlessly jumps on their band wagon.

I’m sure you sense a bit of sarcasm, but here’s the reality: There is no such thing as quick weight loss, unless of course you’re willing to chop off a limb or two. We are wired for survival and our bodies are only willing to let go of 1-2 pounds of fat per week. And yes, when you hear about someone that lost weight quicker than this pace, just know it was at the expense of breaking down their muscles as well as the water that’s stored in their muscles.  Also, if you’re looking for advice on how to lose weight, why not follow the advice of someone who has managed their weight successfully their whole life: look at the food choices they are making and their lifestyle instead of the individual who has lost weight 10 times during their lifetimes only to gain it back.  In fact, 95 % of individuals who go on weight loss diets gain their weight back within 5 years of  losing it and oftentimes gain back more weight than they originally lost. Lose muscle…gain back fat…lower metabolism…gain more weight. This is the cycle that typically starts by thinking you can “jump start” your diet.

So can I jump start my diet…NOPE. This is one of the 10 myths that I will be chatting about on Wednesday, April 13th from 5 - 8 pm. Stop by anytime to discuss a list of common nutrition myths that I’ve jotted down or feel free to bring your own questions. Or, if you just want to stop by to say hi and have a glass of wine, I would love to hang out with you.

Here is a list of some of other common myths that we will be de-bunking…

Are carbs bad for me?

Fruit is high in sugar - so should avoid it?

Are shakes and smoothies good options for weight loss?

Should I avoid eating too close to bedtime?

Is a gluten free diet healthier for me?

These are just to name a few…

I look forward to connecting with you and sharing a little of my “wisdom” as a Registered Dietitian.

Hope to see you Wednesday!!
