I know it doesn't seem like it, but soon we will start seeing sunny days again and with that I start getting asked about sunscreen. But the truth is even on these cloudy gray days we should be wearing sunscreen! You see, sunscreen is not just to protect you from burning, it's also to protect you from the damaging rays that speed up the aging process and cause cancer.
Let’s talk about UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays can penetrate your skin more deeply and cause skin cells to age prematurely, they are responsible for tanning. UVB provides the energy your skin needs to make vitamin D but the energy can burn the skin and increase the cell damage that leads to cancer. I like to think of it as this, UVA is aging and UVB is burning. How many times have you come back from vacation and said I got burned on the cloudiest day because I didn’t wear sunscreen! While clouds do reduce some of the sun's UV rays, they don’t block all of them!
Which sunscreen is best and won’t make me break out or leave me looking chalky? Because not all sunscreens are created equal, you’ll want to get one that contains ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. I suggest Elta MD SPF 46 clear or tinted and IMAGE Prevention SPF 50. RE-APPLY throughout the day with a mineral powder SPF like Tarte or Colorscience. Buy directly from their websites or your dermatologist, not from amazon. And lastly, don’t use last years or expired sunscreen, it’s not only ineffective it might cause a rash or damage your skin.
Next prepare your skin for the changing of the seasons, come get a facial with me to exfoliate away the lingering layers of winter dead skin cells and hydrate your skin so you feel light and ready for warmer sunnier temperatures. It’s all part of our wellness program. And taking care of YOU!
