One of the things we are hearing a lot of lately is that students are embarrassed to come back in studio because you’ve gained weight. Maybe it's that you got out of the rhythm of working out or maybe it's that you were stressed out, and downing that bowl of ice cream or bag of potato chips seemed to be the answer at the time. Regardless, I just want you to know that you are NOT alone!! AND a seemingly simple but hugely challenging concept to grasp is that you can only start where you are. Moving in a more positive direction to take better care of yourself starts with baby steps. So I’m going to give you just 2 suggestions to nudge you in this direction…
1) Come back to your mat: If you’ve ever been in one of my yoga classes you will hear me say that the first thing I tell anyone looking to lose weight is to get on your mat. Start in a better backs class where you can slow down and re-connect with yourself. When you take the time to listen, you gather information about what it’s like to be in the framework of your body and you will undoubtedly start to make better decisions about what it means to take better care of yourself. Often, it’s just beginning to realize when we are actually hungry and when we are full, or when it’s time to grab a snack and when it’s time to put down the fork.
2) Eat Frequently: So my second suggestion goes hand in hand with the first. When you are consistently fueling yourself, you keep your metabolism boosted so you are burning more calories. It’s kind of like you are getting your metabolism to work for you. BUT perhaps even more importantly, eating 4-6 small meals/day keeps your brain fueled which makes it happy. When our brains are happy and less stressed out we tend to make better decisions about what to put in our mouths.
So there you have it. Start by taking these two baby steps. Those unwanted pounds will begin to melt away and one day at a time you will begin to reveal a healthier and happier YOU once again!!
Maybe today’s the day!!
