One of the most common questions we are asked is simply “Where do I start.” It’s a great question because we have over 60 classes a week and just looking at the schedule can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re new to us. So here’s a bit of advice for those of you who are looking for a little guidance…

On the yoga side, start out with Better Backs. It’s a slow paced class aimed at helping you to stretch and de-stress. It’s called Better Backs because every class you will move your spine in 6 different directions to help you restore mobility and range of motion. The room is dim and warm and there are no mirrors so you don’t have to worry about anyone looking at you. The teacher walks around the class to assist, but his/her clear concise directions are what leads you from one pose to another. So you can just close your eyes and focus on YOU!! This is our most popular yoga class so it is offered twice a day Monday-Saturday and once on Sunday!!

Now, if you’re venturing over to the fitness side there are several good places to start. Yes there are mirrors and the room is a bit brighter than the yoga side, but all students are encouraged to work at their own pace. Teachers will frequently offer modifications or different options for each exercise so that everyone can be safe and successful.

So if you’re looking for a little cardio to strengthen your heart and burn fat I would suggest starting with one of our Walk-about classes. The Indoor Walk-about with Kelly moves you forward and back and side to side while doing simple marching and walking steps. Our Outdoor Walk-about is just a walk outdoors with Crystal (weather permitting). You meet up at BL’s front doors and walk at your own pace down and back Locklin Lane. Both of these walking classes will give you approximately 3.5 miles and over 6000 steps!! Now if you’re looking for some toning and sculpting, then I would suggest starting with a Barre or Pilates class. You can firm up some of those neglected areas with no impact to your body. Both of these classes are easy to follow and easy to modify.

One of the most important things to remember when beginning or coming back to a fitness or yoga program is the importance of starting where you are now. I know it sounds obvious but so often we see students jumping into a place they don’t belong, getting frustrated and dropping out. I know there are several peeps out there who haven’t worked out in the past 3 years. Chances are you’ve gained a few pounds. Maybe you used to be an avid gym rat and your ego is telling you to jump right back in where you left off.  But today is today and it is so valuable to acknowledge this reality as you start back up. One day at a time…one workout at a time…and with continuity of practice you will be successful. Hardest part is just showing up!!  You’ve got this!!
